How does the SSN lexicon work?

The SSN lexicon is designed to identify Social Security Numbers (SSN). The lexicon is used to detect 9 digit numbers that meet the format requirements of an SSN and are found in close proximity to a label that identifies the number as an SSN. This format is included in many of the other lexicons, but can also be used independently to identify emails containing SSNs.  

The Social Security Number Lexicon scans for a variety of combinations, including:

• Hyphenated 9 digit valid SSN sequence (nnn-nn-nnnn)
• Consecutive 9 digit valid SSN sequence (nnnnnnnnn) and in proximity to an SSN identifier (such as SSN, SS, etc.)
• A 9 digit valid SSN sequence separated by spaces (nnn nn nnnn) and in proximity of an SSN identifier
